Due to its position, Maldon and the Blackwater Estuary have been popular with settlers since early times. The Battle of Maldon which took place in 991 between the Vikings and the Saxons is commemorated by a statue on the quayside. Maldon Sea Salt production has taken place here since 1882. All Saints' Church is unique in England - it has a triangular tower. It was already built by 1180, when the foundations of Beeleigh Abbey were laid.
